When tackling urgent organizational problems, leaders work hard to identify underlying causes, tap into a wide range of knowledge, and experiment with solutions. But once they’ve mapped out a plan, there’s one more crucial step they must take: crafting a story so compelling that it will harness their organizations’ energy and direct it toward change.
In this live, interactive HBR webinar, HBS professor Frances Frei and leadership coach Anne Morriss described how to master storytelling that drives bold change.
Drawing on decades of experience helping senior executives lead large-scale transformations, they outlined four key steps to outstanding storytelling: 1) Understand your story so well that you can describe it in simple terms; 2) Honor the past; 3) Articulate a persuasive mandate for change; and 4) Lay out a rigorous and optimistic path forward.
In addition to dissecting each of these four steps, Frei and Morriss focused on:
- Why storytelling is so important
- How to craft and deliver a great story to get others behind it
- Why emotions are so important, and how to tap into them
- How to aggressively promote your narrative
They shared real-world examples of great storytelling from leaders of companies such as T-Mobile, Uber, Domino’s, Xerox, and more.
